TWP 1500 Series Stains

Total Wood Preservative Low VOC Formulation

TWP 1500 SERIES is a low VOC preservative offering enhanced UV protection. This EPA registered wood preservative assists in preventing structural damage and wood decay on exterior above ground wood surfaces. This low VOC formulation should be used in place of the TWP 100 SERIES for Low VOC States. TWP 1500 series can resist the water absorption that causes warping, cracking and splitting as well as prevent freeze damage in colder climates. This product is designed for use on substrates such as new and old exterior wood for Decks, Fences, Siding, Log Homes and so on.

TWP 1500 Series should dry with a flat look (no glossy areas). The optimum application temperature range is normally 50-85°F. Do not apply TWP 1500 Series when rain is expected to fall within 48 hours of an initial application. As this is an oil-based stain preservative continue to mix the product occasionally during its use. For best results, apply by brush but no more than the material can easily absorb. First Coat is about 300-400 sq. ft./gal. Allow material to penetrate 10-15 minutes and then apply a second coat at 400-500 sq. ft./gal. Typically, a two-coat application is adequate, but wood porosity may dictate the use of more or less TWP.

Quality Oil-Based Stain Preservative

Since 1985 TWP products have been made in the USA at the company’s Pacific, Missouri plant. When using TWP 1500 Series on new wood it is usually best to allow 4 to 12 months of natural weathering. After the aging period clean the wood substrate with a quality solution of oxygen bleach such as DEFY Wood Cleaner or similar before commencing with application. This applies to older previously treated or stained surfaces as well. Tough the latter may first require a wood stain stripper. DEFY Stain Stripper is one recommendation. The trick is in remember that TWP is a penetrating type system and is not designed to build a film. So only apply to properly prepared clean, dry and absorbent bare wood.

Wood Staining Considerations

New Wood: It is necessary to allow new wood to age for up to six months before staining with TWP 1500 Series. Pressure treated lumber should be allowed 12 months natural weathering.

Old Wood: Untreated old wood can be revived to look like new. Remove mildew growth with a Wood Cleaner followed by a 1500-2500 PSI output power washer. Previously stained wood may require a chemical stripping or brightening agent combined with power washing to remove all of the old coating. When working with a power washer use caution to avoid excess fraying of the wood surface.

Why EPA Registration

All products making claims to destroy or suppress the growth of microorganisms such as mold and/or mildew on inanimate objects and surfaces must submit chemical makeup, acceptable data on product performance (effectiveness), toxicological effects, ecological effects and ecological fate to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) for approval of such claims. All US pesticide products, including wood preservatives, are regulated by EPA and may not be sold with such claims until EPA has approved the formulations and granted an EPA Registration number which must then appear on the product label.
