Modern Masters Metallic paint colors
are an elegant alternative to ordinary latex paint. Unlike other metallic
paint, Modern Masters Metallic Paint applies similar to traditional latex.
Metallic paint colors are non-tarnishing, non-yellowing and dry to a shimmering,
semi-gloss finish. The Metallic Paint Collection color pallet is available
in 40 standard colors, from basic metal colors of silver, gold, copper,
and bronze to a complex range of designer colors like rich blue, luxurious
green, warm red, deep brown, and cool gray. Modern Masters Metallic Paint
Collection colors can be applied by brush, roller or HVLP spray gun.

What you need to know
about Metallic Paint
|
|
Modern Masters Metallic Paint is a water
based, non-hazardous, modified-acrylic paint containing mica particles,
aluminum pigments and conventional light-fast colorants. The viscosity is
similar to standard architectural latex paint as is the application properties.
Low odor, fast drying and high-hiding characteristics make it user-friendly
in any architectural environment. However because the shiny non-reactive
metallic paint highlights imperfections, it will look best on smooth, well
prepared surfaces. All colors can be inter-mixed or tinted with universal
tints to a limitless array of color options. To view the forty standard
colors click here.

To apply metallic paints, you follow standard
practices and procedures for preparing surfaces for the application of traditional
water-based latex. All surfaces to be painted must be entirely free
of dust, dirt, oil, grease, and other contaminants.
Remove all loose, flaking, or chalking paint from the surfaces.
Properly prime the clean, dry
surface with a high-quality 100% acrylic primer
like Zinsser Bull’s-eye 1-2-3 primer/sealer and allow the surface to dry
completely; preferably overnight. It is recommended that the opaque
paints be applied in two coats and the semi-opaque be applied in three.
The sheer paints are recommended to be applied by spray to produce an even,
highlight affect.

Application Methods & Tips
|
|
Priming:
Recommendations include rust-inhibitive primer for steel surfaces, enamel
under coater for wood, and two coats of a high latex primer for drywall.
Deep tone primers matched to the approximate color of the finish coat will
help the metallic paints go farther. If you are trying to coat a shiny object,
a bonding primer may be needed first to ensure adequate adhesion.
Brushing:
Use a high-quality brush recommended for water-based semi-gloss paints.
Rolling:
To roll Metallic Paint add up to 16 fluid ounces/473 milliliters of
Modern Masters® Metallic Paint Extender to one US gallon/3.78 liters of
Metallic Paint. The Extender imparts the wet-edge time needed to avoid lap
marks. Use the Metallic Paint Roller to apply Metallic Paint to large surfaces,
such as walls. Use a 4-inch sausage roller (such as a Whizz roller) to cut
in corners, ceilings, and baseboards. Work in approximately 4-foot wide
section, keeping a wet edge, and finishing the surface by back-rolling in
one direction, ceiling to floor. This procedure will minimize lap marks,
properly orient the metallic paint particles, and ensure a uniform surface.
Spraying:
This product is engineered for spray use. Use a HVLP gun to spray
Metallic Paint. For small projects we suggest using the Binks MI-G HVLP
cup gun with a 1.4mm tip, connected to a conventional air compressor with
pressure from the compressor to the gun set at 60-70 psi.
For large areas, such as architectural jobs, we suggest the Binks 2001 conventional
suction feed spray gun with a 1.8mm tip, connected to a pressure pot, set
at 60-70 psi. There are similar type systems on the market but tip sizes
and settings may vary depending on the type of system being used. Use of
an airless spray system is not recommend as it will diminish the metallic
properties of the paint leading to a dull, lifeless finish. If thinning
is necessary, add up to 16 fluid ounces/473 milliliters of water to one
US gallon/3.78 liters of Metallic Paint. Over thinning of the paint will
result in loss of hide. Use a NIOSH approved respirator when spraying and
provide adequate ventilation. If you do not have access to DIY paint
equipment consult your local yellow pages for rental companies in your area
or try the Rental Site, who offer a directory of rental providers nationwide.

Dry-to-touch time: Approximately
1 hour. Re-coat time is approximately ˝ hour. The dry times will vary with
temperature and humidity. Drying times at 70°F and 50%RH. Lower temperature
and/or higher humidity will lengthen the dry and cure times.
Important
Note: Do not apply Metallic Paint Collection over slick,
glossy, or top-coated surfaces - apply ONLY onto properly primed surfaces.
