Aging, distressing or weathering paint?
Modern Masters® has mixed the ancient art of patinization
with modern-day paint technology to create the Metal Effects® Decorative
Painting System. This painting process allows you to alter the look
and feel of the surface to mimic aging, distressing or weathering through
the use of a rust, tarnish or oxidization process. Metal Effects painting
techniques can be used to create an original aged, distressed or weathered
look and feel in a matter of minutes as compared to the months, years or

This page features Reactive Metal Paints;
paints used for creating genuine patina finishes. Patina is the color or
incrustation which age gives to works of art or other objects. Popular applications
for this product are moldings, railings, rain gutters, vases, planters,
picture frames, metal roofing, statues and other works or symbols of art
that are paintable. Reactive Metallic Paints are water based and contain
real metal particles. These paints will age and tarnish naturally over long
periods of time with natural exposure to the surrounding environment and
its elements. To speed up this aging process and produce the desired patina
affect now, you need only to apply one of the reactive solutions available
here. You will however need to prime the surface first with two coats
of acid blocking primer. Do not skip this step; otherwise the uncontrolled
patinizing reactions will give a discolored, uneven, mottled finish when
the Patina Aging Solution or Activators are applied, resulting in an unsightly
finish.

Modern Masters®
Reactive Metallic Paint, Acid-Blocking Primer, Patina Aging Solution
and Permacoat Patina Sealers will cover approximately 300-350 sq. ft./gallon.
Reactive Metallic Paint recoat time is approximately 20-30 minutes.
Apply two or more coats. Full cure is in approximately 12 hours.
Acid-Block Primer recoat time is in approximately 15 minutes.
Apply two coats. Full cure is in approximately 12 hours.
Permacoat Patina Sealer recoat time is approximately 20 - 30 minutes.
Full cure is in 12 hours.

The Products you need to
complete the job
|

If painting over metal, wood, alkaline,
any other reactive surface it is recommended that Acid Blocking Primer be
used with all reactive metallic finishes. Metal Effects Acid Blocking
Primer can
 easily
be applied by brush, roller or spray equipment. Conceptually evolutionary,
this water based Acid Blocking Primer makes sure that the surface stays
protected from the eventual patina solution. In other words we are aging
the painted surface not weakening the object surface. Primers other than
Metal Effects itself should be avoided as they may permit the Patina Aging
solution & activator to penetrate to the object surface. This penetration
can cause disruption to the desired patina color and damage the finish by
bringing the rust or tannic acids to the surface.

Metal Effects Patina Aging Solution
and Activator is applied to speed up the oxidization process. It allows
you to create beautiful, authentic
 Patina,
Baroque and Rusted Iron finishes from a paintable surface. The Green, Blue
or Black Patina Aging Solutions can be applied to Metal Effects® Copper,
Harvest Gold, Pale Gold, Rich Gold or Bronze reactive Metallic Paints. The
Baroque Activator is applied to Metal Effects® Baroque Metallic Paint. This
combination will create a unique, real two-tone Copper/Silver finish. The
Rust Activator is applied to the Metal Effects® Iron Paint. This combination
will create a weathered rust finish. Patina Aging Solutions and Rust Activator
can be applied using a brush or sea sponge, or sprayed by attaching the
Metal Effects® Spritzer Cap directly to the bottle. Baroque Activator may
be applied using a brush or sea sponge only. This product cannot be spray
applied.

The Benefits of PermaCoat Varnish |
|
To enjoy the ancient art of patina inside
or outside your home for years to come you will need to protect the finished
painted surface to prevent further oxidation, aging and weathering. Permacoat
is a clear, water based sealer that protects surfaces that have been oxidized
with the Metal Effects® Patina Aging Solutions & Activators. It works by
forming a film over the highly acidic surface and can prevent further oxidation
and limit color change without cracking or yellowing. Permacoat can be applied
using a brush, roller or spray equipment and is suitable for interior surfaces.
For extra durability on exterior surfaces use Modern Masters®
MasterClear™
over a layer of Permacoat. Never use MasterClear
alone to protect reactive paints.
